This cowl is crocheted with 2 strands of #4 worsted weight yarn held together or 1 strand of #6 super bulky yarn. This cowl is a great way to use up odd skeins that you're not sure exactly what to do with or to create a fast last minute gift.
Circumference 28” (71 cm) unstretched, 12” (30 cm) in height.
298 yds (272 m) worsted weight #4 yarn (shown crocheted in #931-205 Mountain Dawn, Lion Brand Textures, 90% acrylic, 10% nylon, 149 yds/136 m per skein). I used all of my two skeins of this yarn, held double.
Hooks and Other Materials
*One 10.0 mm Crochet hook (N/P)
The gauge isn't particularly important, what you're looking for is a starting chain of about 28 inches or your desired width.
• Chain 1 at the beginning of each round DOES NOT count as a stitch.
• Join the end of each round with a slip stitch into the first stitch.
• This pattern is written in American crochet terms.
Stitches and Techniques
hdc: double crochet - Yarn over, insert hook under both top loops of stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through all 3 loops on hook.
sl st: slip stitch - Insert hook into stitch and draw yarn through this stitch and existing stitch on hook in one motion.
Chain 45 and measure to be sure it's a good size for you. I like a cowl opening of about 28 inches. If you need more or less chains, adjust for your size. Then join the circle with a slip stitch into the first chain, being certain not to twist the chain.
Round 1: Chain 1, hdc in every chain around, sl st into chain 1 to finish circle.
Round 2: Chain 1, hdc in every hdc around, sl st into chain 1 to finish circle.
Repeat round 2 until the cowl reaches the height you like or when you run out of yarn. Mine was 19 rounds. Secure your end.
Cut yarn, leaving an 8” (20.5 cm) tail. Thread yarn needle with tail and weave in ending yarn tail on inside of cowl. Repeat with beginning yarn tail and trim off any excess yarn.
